Bannerman Brewing Co. is one of my favourite downtown spots. I really like the aesthetic of the space, it makes me want to spend hours there. But my favourite thing about it is the accessibility features. Although it’s not technically considered wheelchair accessible due to certain regulations, the owners have certainly put effort into making it a wheelchair friendly place.
I chatted with one of the owners before my first visit there to find out more about their wheelchair accessibility, because I didn’t want to venture down there and then find out I couldn’t get inside. Phil wrote me back quickly and explained all of the accessibility features to me so I could know in advance what to expect. He also asked for any suggestions I may have, so I sent him along a few notes after my visit and he was very receptive to them and eager to make it even more accessible, which I love to see!
For those who need to know about accessibility features before deciding to check Bannerman Brewing out, here are some things to keep in mind:
– The entrance to the front door and the patio inside are both at grade with the ground so a wheelchair can access.
– There isn’t an automatic door opener, so if you’re using a mobility aid you might need someone to open the door for you.
– There’s lots of space inside to maneuver around in a wheelchair.
– There is a washroom on ground level that is large enough for a wheelchair to turn around in, has a grab bar by the toilet, and a sink that a wheelchair can wheel up to.
– Most of the tables inside would be accessible for a wheelchair if a chair is pulled out.
– The patio has some wheelchair accessible seating.
– The event space is upstairs and is currently inaccessible, so if you’d like to attend any events there and can’t do stairs make sure it’s happening on the main floor.
